FC Groningen has changed its scouting approach. Head scout Arno de Jong explains how the club uses data and technology to find talent.
How does the scouting work?
The scouting at FC Groningen is no longer just a matter of a man on the tribune with a notebook. The club uses data and technology to analyze and select players.
The club works with two parties, Impact and SkillCorner, to collect data on players. This data is used to evaluate and select players.
What are the parameters?
The club has set a number of parameters to evaluate players. These parameters include danger from under- or overlaps, involvement in chances, and playing out opponents.
| Parameter | Description |
|---|---|
| Danger from under- or overlaps | Whether the player becomes dangerous by going inside or outside |
| Involvement in chances | Whether the player is involved in chances to score |
How is the data used?
The data is used to select and evaluate players. The club looks for players who meet the parameters and are affordable for the club.
FC Groningen is currently in 9th place in the Eredivisie, with 48 points from 34 games. The club has scored 49 goals and conceded 45 goals.
What are the challenges?
The club must distinguish itself from the competition. The Eredivisie is a competitive league and the club must adapt to be able to compete.
The club is 36 points behind leader PSV Eindhoven. The club must therefore focus on the upcoming games to earn points and maintain its position in the Eredivisie.
The recent form of the club is WWLLD. The club must therefore recover to be able to win again.
